Missouri's financial responsibility law, RSMo §303.020(10) , requires everyone that drives a vehicle, whether it's a motorcycle, a truck or a car, to carry auto insurance. But, if you are in a car crash caused by someone else and that person does not have auto insurance, your own insurance “steps into the shoes” of that other driver. So even if it's not your fault, your own auto policy will cover you for the fault of another. That is why it is so important to have as much coverage as possible on your own policy. You may think you are getting a great deal on auto insurance by covering yourself with a low $25,000 uninsured motorist policy. However, too many people have these low minimum policies. If you have a minimum policy and someone without insurance causes an accident where you get seriously hurt, the most you will likely be able to recover is $25,000.
Take control and make sure you cover yourself. If you have insurance, you will automatically have a $25,000 uninsured motorist policy. I suggest at least a $100,000/$300,000 UM policy. This means that each person in your car that's hurt can recover up to $100,000 and that your insurance company will pay up to a combined limit of $300,000 in the event that multiple people are seriously hurt in your car due to the negligence of another driver without auto insurance.
